Men's Winter Style Tip No.1 Fit First, Fashion Second

Fashion is always changing and if you're not one for clothes shopping, heading into a high street store might have you feeling more overwhelmed than inspired. If you're a plus size man, we highly recommend sticking to a plus size specialist to find your fits. High street chains are starting to become more inclusive with their sizing ranges, however many stores still offer little selection, not to mention unflattering styles that are not catered to the bigger man.

Whether you choose to visit a plus size men's store in person or online, make sure you visit the sizing guide page or ask a store member for sizing tips. take your measurements at home and get to know your body shape. Knowing your true size can make a huge difference when it comes to choosing clothing. Despite what many men think, big and baggy is not your friend as a bigger dude. Well fitting, tailored looks are far more complementary to a larger frame and will slim you down rather than highlight your insecurities.

Once you know your true size you can then begin to select pieces you feel the most comfortable and confident in. If you're clueless about what styles to go for, opt for timeless, classic pieces that never truly go out of style. These include classic jacket styles such as the bomber, the Harrington, the mac and the Parka, classic straight leg jeans and trousers (which look great on all body shapes) and classic button front shirts. If in doubt, opt for clean, unfussy looks. Bold patterns and embellishments can look awesome when done right, but classic simple looks will always win when you aren't sure what to wear.

Winter Style Tip no.2 - layers layers and more layers

Layering works best with a wardrobe containing a simple selection of classic, clean pieces. It's a great way to look put together with little effort. Start with a classic t shirt and jean and add some interest with an open, button-front flannel or corduroy shirt. Then, add your favourite winter jacket or coat followed by some classic winter accessories like a hat and scarf. Pair with boots or trainers and enjoy your new-found winter style!

For a smarter look, choose a trouser in a warm material such as wool or corduroy and pair with a classic shoe such as a brogue or Oxford. Add on top a chunky knit and your favourite winter coat. Accessorise with a hat and a pair of sophisticated leather gloves.

Winter Style Tip No.3 Stick to a Colour Palette

As a bigger guy, you may have been told to stay away from pattern and colour to avoid 'drawing attention' to your insecurities, but this is nonsense! If you want to wear pattern, size really doesn't matter. What does matter however is the type of pattern you go for, and this is where sticking to a colour palette can help. If you want to make dressing easy, then a set colour palette is your best friend. Neutral colours will always work well together and can be mixed and matched endlessly to create many outfit combinations - even from a few simple pieces.

If you really want to get to know your style, it can help to understand which colours complement your skin tone. There are a few ways you can determine this but one of the easiest tricks is to look at the veins in your wrist. Green veins for example indicate olive skin which work well with warm greens such as turquoise, creamy neutrals such as oatmeal and chocolate browns, all of which work great together too! If your veins look more blue, you're probably working with cool undertones, best complemented by icy blues, deep purples and emerald greens. If your veins look somewhere in between, congratulations, you have a neutral skin tone and are likely to suit any colour!
